Stunning Bespoke Commissions: Miracle Baby Hot Air Balloon Linocut
Working on bespoke commissioned linocuts is a really wonderful part of what I do. Creating something truly unique to someone’s brief results in my clients getting exactly what they want and means that nobody else has anything like it. What could be better?
The Brief
Mairie-Claire got in touch when she found out she was pregnant. It had taken a long time and she wanted to mark the new baby with a special one off print. I was thrilled to create such a special piece in celebration of such a momentous event in her life.
Mairie-Claire new what she wanted from the get go. She had decided on a hot air balloon and sent over some reference photos of hot air balloon designs that she liked. This is always really useful because it gives me a really clear idea of what the client is looking for. It can also be helpful to know what a client doesn’t want too.
Creating the Commissioned Print
From that, I put together some sketches of balloons with different patterns and colour palettes. She picked the green and gold. The colours fit with the planned nursery and the sheen of the gold added something extra that brought a smile to her face.
Keeping Mum
Mairie-Claire wanted ‘the big reveal’ at the end so chose not to see the process. Because of this, I held off sharing anything about the commission on my social media or website. I have every respect for the fact that people may want to keep things private or as a surprise, particularly with something related to a pregnancy.
Once completed, she entrusted me with the name of her baby and the title of her piece - not even the family knew his name yet! The baby’s name was tome included in the name of the print so this was a real show of trust. The piece was called ‘Seth, how far you’ll go’ and was signed and numbered as 1 of 1.
She was thrilled with her piece and had it hung up in the nursery ready for Seth’s arrival.
