A Guide to Buying Art - The Customer

I’ve known Louisa for a long time and she has been a supporter of my art business from the very beginning. She knows my style and has seen it develop over the last few years. Mum of two gorgeous children and two very well behaved and loving dogs, Louisa lives a busy life juggling family and business as cofounder of The Dog Log with her husband Nathan. She cares about supporting local business, taking care of the environment (and dogs in particular) and living an ethical life.

When I asked her to write a piece about how she went about choosing art for her home, she was excited to get involved. Here’s what she had to say on the matter…

Louisa’s Experience

After living in our house for 4 years, we felt it was time to get some art on the walls. We started with a photo wall and some pieces we had been gifted but we had a new extension and wanted to choose specific art for the space.

I already had a few items from The Peacock and the Printmaker so was drawn to her art. Previously I had a cup, some Christmas tree decorations and some lovely make up bags. I initially got the make up bags for others as gifts but loved the designs so got some for myself. The process of printmaking intrigued me so I have also had some of the little kits for my daughter and nieces.

When thinking of the art I started with colour. I am often drawn to colour before the actual content of the art and The Peacock and the Printmaker uses wonderful colour combinations. I love yellow and the kitchen has bits of yellow and huge windows to allow us to watch the garden so the bee print fitted perfectly. From here I asked Heather for her suggestions. I feel that Heather always listens to what I’m actually after and she suggested the ‘Pink Hibiscus’ which fitted perfectly with the indoor/outdoor feel we were after.

I am in no way an artist or interior design expert. This is my first home to fully explore design and I’m learning as I go. What I’m loving about art is that it can be moved and used in different ways. I like art to bring sections of the room together. Our kitchen is our dining room too so we’re now looking for another piece of art for the living room side. Another colourful piece from Heather is needed. It will be different from the current two but her distinctive style will bring the spaces together.
These pieces of art are now part of our home. I’m starting to realise that for us the art and the memories and representations of those pieces are part of the fabric of making a house become a home.
